Dental Crowns

A crown is a cap that encases the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape and size. A crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be easily restored with fillings or other types of restorations.

There are several kinds of crowns, usually sorted by the type of material. Full gold crowns have the greatest strength and require less tooth removal, but are not as esthetically pleasing. Porcelain-metal crowns have a metal foundation with porcelain laid over top, giving the crown a natural tooth colour. These types of crowns have excellent durability as well, but do require more tooth removal. Full porcelain crowns have the most natural appearance but can fracture more easily (although newer porcelain materials seem to be getting stronger).

Whatever the material, crowns are made to match the shape, size, and functionality of your original teeth, giving you a natural, long-lasting beautiful smile.

Reasons for crowns:

  • Broken or fractured tooth
  • Cosmetic enhancement
  • Decayed teeth
  • Fractured fillings
  • Very large existing fillings
  • Teeth with root canals
